Bad experience with book store

It seems that desktop publishing can be risky if you are selling a publication through a book store.
Some book stores don’t exactly take great care of the publications they are entrusted to sell on behalf of the publisher. Or maybe most do, maybe the following was just an isolated experience.
When I noticed that a local book store had run out of one of my publications, I naturally assumed that it had sold every copy of the publication.
Not so.
One copy had gotten so damaged it was impossible to sell it.
It wasn’t so much dog-eared as dog-mauled. Attack dog mauled. If dog-eared is condition orange, dog-mauled by an attack dog is condition red.
The question is, who is legally responsible for this damage?
The book store, or myself.
